Frequently Asked Questions
+ What is included in the different options? What is the difference between them?
The You Do It (DIY) package includes everything you need for a night out in the great outdoors; Camp Kitchen, Tent, Cots, Camp Chairs, Hammock, Dinnerware, Lanterns, and more (full gear list). You pick it up (in Lexington), set it up yourself, break it down, and return it to us.
The We Do It (Set up included) package is all of the above, PLUS you arrive to a campsite that is ready for you to kick back, relax and enjoy the fresh air. And, the best part, when it’s time to head home, just pack your things and leave the gear how you found it. All the fun without any of the hassle!
The size options allow you to customize your site based on the number of people in your party and your tent preference. The Standard set up is perfect for up to five people (one tent). The Double includes two tents and is great for parties of up to 8, or if you prefer two tents (kid tent!). For parties larger than 8, please book two sites.
+ How much does it cost?
It depends on the size of your group, you set-preference (DIY vs. set up included), and the number of nights you are camping. The table below (coming soon) provides pricing for all combinations:
+ I have never slept in a tent. What is the set-up?
Our standard set-up is to provide a camping cot or inflatable sleeping pad for everyone in your party. The cots keep you up off the ground (18”) and also provide a place to sit in your tent. The inflatable mattresses are available on request and may be used depending on party size and gear package selection.
See the Gear section of our photo gallery for visuals.
If you are a snuggler, you may prefer to bring an air mattress. If that is your preference, let us know and we can provide a discount code that credits you for cot rental/set-up.
+ What do we need to pack?
The essentials - Bring your clothes, toiletries, sleeping bags/covers and pillows, swim gear, sunscreen, towels, food, drinks, snacks and anything else for a night away. Rain gear is always good to have, but, just in case, there are four emergency ponchos included with your package.
The extras - You may want to throw in your fishing rods (you’ll need a license), bikes, boats (life jackets!), books, sketch pad, board games (we provide a deck of cards), instruments, etc. The lake is just steps away from your site and hiking and biking trails are accessible from the campground.
See Packing List for more details.
+ What about showers and restrooms?
Each of the National Forest campgrounds where we operate feature restroom and shower facilities that are well-lit and include hot and cold water, hand soap, hand dryer, and a sanitizer station. These facilities are cleaned and serviced multiple times per day by the campground hosts.
+ Do I need to bring my own water for drinking, cooking, etc?
The campgrounds have multiple water spigots on each loop, so access to potable water is never more than a few steps away from your site. We provide a stainless steel crock that holds 2.5 gallons of water and features a spout for easy use. If you prefer spring water or extra filtration, the crock works well with the large refillable jugs available at many grocery and hardware stores.
+ What is the cancellation policy?
If your plans change more than three days prior to your reservation, you can choose a FULL refund or reschedule for another date.
If your plans change within 72 hours of your check-in time, you can choose a 50% refund or reschedule for another date at no charge.
If a severe weather alert (as defined by the National Weather Service) on the day of your reservation causes you to cancel or not stay overnight, you can reschedule for another date at no charge.
If the campgrounds have to close for any reason you will receive a full refund.
Our cancellation policy is also available in the resources section of the website.
+ Is there cell phone service at the campgrounds?
Yes, though it may vary by carrier. We have had no issues with Verizon in both campgrounds.
+ Can I book multiple, consecutive nights?
Yes. To ensure site availability and give you the most options, we book each night separately. Simply select each date from the drop down on the Choose Your Dates page and add to cart individually.
+ Can I bring my dog/pet?
Yes! Kentucky Camp Company and the campgrounds where we operate are pet friendly. Pets must be leashed at all times.
+ What else is there to do in this area?
Cave Run Lake is located near Morehead, Kentucky in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The area offers incredible outdoor recreation opportunities and more. We find something new to add to our page of Things To Do in the Area every time we visit.
+ Are there resources or tips for how to plan for meals while camping?
Yes! Keep it simple, but yummy! Some of the best meals are made over an open fire. You will have a gas stove, skillets and a campfire. There are tons of campfire foil pack recipes on the web; bagels, brats, sandwiches and s’mores are a few of our favorites!
+ What happens if it rains?
Keep having fun! Don’t let a little rain ruin your time, get cozy in your tent, go on a rainwalk, dance in the rain! Bring in the snacks, lanterns and play some cards, read a book, REST. The tent has a great rainfly to keep you protected. Should there be extreme weather, KY Camp Co. will send a text to notify you. Please always check the radar and forecast before you go to keep any possible weather activity in mind.
If it rains on you during your time in the campground, we will send you a discount code that you can use on future reservations :)
+ Is camping safe during the pandemic?
Yes, camping is considered one of the LOW-RISK activities for you during the pandemic. You are outside, campsites are distanced and the bathhouses are single use and kept clean. Twin Knobs campground is taking every precaution needed to keep the campsites safe. You can find our KY Camp Co protocols on our homepage. We take this VERY seriously.
Check out our Covid-19 Updates page for more info and resources on this topic.
+ Can I book my own campsite and use the gear?
It depends. This is definitely something we are interested in, so if you have an adventure in mind and think we can help, send an email to kycampco@gmail.com. We are happy to brainstorm with you.
+ What do I do in case of emergency? Where is nearest hospital?
In case of emergency, dial 911.
Your site includes a first aid kit for minor scrapes and issues. There will also be a host on your loop and staff at the front gate to the campground that can provide assistance and information.
The nearest hospital is in Morehead (St. Claire HealthCare). This is 20 minutes from the Twin Knobs Campground and 45 minutes from Zilpo.
